Cheap but effective
This toy has been a staple in our house now for years, ever since my sister first introduced me to them. Her four cats and two of the three cats I've had have always gone absolutely bonkers for them (the other has such a low prey drive that she won't even chase the red dot from a laser pointer, so probably not the best yardstick for how fun a toy is to the average kitty).
It is the simplest thing in the world, yet the cats love it. It's literally just a piece of very flexible wire with several pieces of very tightly wound cardboard strung on it. Unlike a standard wand toy, you barely need to move your hand at all for the wire to move and, every time the cat bats at it, it's going to go flying in a different direction. The unpredictability keeps our cats engaged in a way that a lot of other toys don't, and it's fun to watch them drive themselves absolutely crazy trying to actually catch the thing.
They're very durable, too. I may or may not have accidentally run the vacuum over ours a few times. We just bought our second one, not because the other has stopped working but because cats are terrible at taking turns so having two is good. I've introduced this toy to several friends recently whose cats have also mostly loved them. For the price, it really can't be beat, and if your cat likes trying to catch things, it will probably like this toy.
