So far, perfect for my Giant Schnauzer
I just received this yesterday. After reading probably hundreds of reviews, I determined that I could not determine if it would work for me. I decided to try it, given the 30 day return window. If anything changes with this review, I will update.
I live on 5 acres, with about 3/4 of an acre around the house that is yard. The rest is woods. All neighbors are at least an acre away. My property slopes but I don't have valleys or ravines, nor do I have metal buildings. I have a lightly busy road in front, a rental home to one side and a neighbor on the other side about 2 acres away. The backyard is woods sloping up. The front yard is grass and weedy easement, sloping down.
I wanted to keep my pup from visiting the rental home and getting to the road. I wanted to have space to play frisbee. I wanted him to be able to explore up into the woods out back. I wanted to be able to work in the yard with him out, not having to spend more time watching him than working.
I placed the base unit on a covered porch on one side of the house.
I started training in the driveway with flags clearly placed at the 'tone' boundary. The collar was set at 2. He saw the flags, noticed the tone and the zap got his attention but was mild. I upped the collar to 4 and started over. After about 10 minutes of training in the driveway, he would stay behind the tone boundary and not follow me as I walked to the road.
Giant Schnauzers run like racehorses when the mood strikes. He was running his zoomies, into the easement, and came to the boundary. One small yelp and he turned around and zoomed in the other direction. He seems to have understood and was not traumatized at all. That was the only time he yelped at getting zap. He usually reacts with an ear twitch, maybe a little jump, and then backs up.
This morning, I trained in the rental home direction. People were there, including loud little kids. He got one zap, turned around, and decided he wasn't interested.
So far, I am thrilled with this purchase.
