One of the dogs and one of the cats have coats that are like felt. Seriously
I am not a professional groomer, nor do I play one on TV. What I am is a pet owner who decided to start using a budget. Wow, who knew the reason my husband and I are (soon to be were) broke all the time is because even though we make a lot of money we spend more than we make. Okay, actually, anyone with two brain cells could have figured that out, but it took us a while. So, we created a budget. And one of the things that there is not room for in the budget is taking the three dogs and three cats to the groomers. We'd rather keep buying them food and taking them to the vet. So, time for me to learn to do something more than brush the golden retriever.

I tried to use this with the guard on it because I was afraid I was going to screw up and make the dog look funny. The cat won't care if he looks funny. He's a cat. He doesn't give a...darn. But the dog is sensitive. Her feelings would be hurt if the other dogs made fun of her because I shaved her too close.
Unfortunately, using it with the guard was a little like trying to use a fork to sew a seam instead of a needle. I could get the guard into the fur, but it sure as heck was not going to go through the fur. It was a lot more like yanking her fur out of her body than it was shaving her. If holding still indicates compliance as opposed to just confirming that she's dumber than a box of rocks, she was willing to let me yank her hair out by the roots, but she kept looking at me as if to say, "Why do you hate me?" So, I took the guard off. Oh. My. God. without the guard it went through her fur like a hot knife through butter. It shaved so much and so fast that I seriously considered, for a single mad moment, getting a sheep so I could say I've sheared a sheep. Actually, I have sheared an Angora Goat, which is a lot like shearing a sheep, only not, and in any case I used scissors to clip the goat, not clippers to clip the goat. But, I digress.
My sheep free but dog and cat containing home is a much happier place now. The dogs are all groomed. The felted cat is groomed. I did learn that I never tipped the groomer enough money. Ever. I didn't know that the cat hated being groomed until I was the one grooming him. He is not dumber than a box of rocks and he did not hold still even though I was not yanking his fur out by the roots. I just feel fortunate he confined his objections to hissing at me and didn't actually try to kill me, because I'm pretty sure that one serious swipe at my jugular and he could take me down. It's good I practiced on the dog.
In any case we saved a boat load of money. In a single day the clipper paid for itself about five times over.
But, the dog does look funny. I wonder how much a dog psychologist will cost us.
